Along Ontario’s highways and backroads, wild animals are suffering in roadside zoos. Unlike other provinces, Ontario has no central licensing system for zoos. That means almost anyone can keep a wild animal—often with little expertise, oversight, or accountability.
Roadside zoos often claim to promote education or conservation—but what lessons are really being taught? Viewing a wild animal in distress, stripped of their natural behaviours and habitat, teaches indifference—not empathy.
Every photo here is evidence of a broken system. These animals did not choose to live in cages. And yet, until Ontario enacts strong provincial legislation, their suffering continues.
Ontario must do better. Animals deserve protection—no matter where they’re kept. Through this project, I hope to raise awareness and push for change. These animals cannot speak for themselves, but through photography, their truth can be seen.
